RMC - Take Me Away

Michael Wood
TV presenter, historian & musician:

RMC - Take Me Away album cover."An album of songs reflecting the many tastes of the band and the music all of us of a certain generation grew up with - from rock and roll to folk - with echoes of Northern Songs and California Dreams. These are all finely crafted original songs - with some gorgeous tunes among them (check out Take Me Away with its plaintive, almost Neil Young-like lilt). There are distant echoes of the Beatles Hard Day's night period on Every Heart Needs A Home and Fat Cat pastiches their late period. There are minor key odes to love and even a Steely Dan type shuffle with a tasty lead riff. Here too is the Englishness of it - the humour, the wistful songs of lost love, and even a bit of agitprop.

"What strikes me listening to the band's songs is that they come out of a lifetime of playing and listening to our music, played with skill and commitment by real professionals. This is the music played every night in clubs, pubs and venues up and down the land - without which our national music scene would wither away. And on Too Much Pressure you even get Andy's rockabilly as a bonus. So kick away that chair... get down and boogie..."

Take Me Away

Music and lyrics by Paul Marfleet

Take me away I'm tired of the same old places
I'm dusty and down I need some alpine air
Hold your breath and do the deed
Don't be nervous just believe
And a glass or two of Chevalier Rouge
And a glass or two of Chevalier Rouge

Take me away I'm tired of the same old places
I'm hungry for change I need some Tuscan fayre
Hold your breath and do the deed
Don't be nervous just believe
And a glass or two of Chevalier Rouge
And a glass or two of Chevalier Rouge

Held by habit trapped in time
I am yours and you are mine
Before the days begin to fade
See the chances we have made
Sail me away I'm tired of the same old faces
Sail me away a cat and the open sea
Bring your acu-magic
No lame excuse or logic
And a glass or two of Chevalier Rouge
And a glass or two of Chevalier Rouge

Held by habit trapped in time
I am yours and you are mine
Before the days begin to fade
See the chances we have made

Take me away I'm tired of the same old places
I'm dusty and down I need some alpine air
Hold your breath and do the deed
Don't be nervous just believe
And a glass or two of Chevalier Rouge
And a glass or two of Chevalier Rouge
Just a glass or two
Just a glass or two

Don't Come Any Closer

Music and lyrics by Andy Caven

Don't come any closer I don't want you next to me
She said just don't come any closer I don't want you next to me
You know that I tried it all before and now I'm really sure
No-one can love no-one can love no-one can love
No-one can love me

Don't write me letters don't call me on the 'phone
Don't send me flowers just leave me on my own
Don't even talk to me at all
Don't even talk to me at all
'Cause ev'ry time I see you yes ev'ry time I see you
I know I'm still in love I'm still in love

Don't say you love me I heard it all before
Don't look that way I don't believe what your eyes say
Don't lay your head upon my shoulder
Don't even put your hand in my hand
'Cause ev'ry time you touch me yes ev'ry time you touch me
'Cause ev'ry time you touch me yes ev'ry time you touch me
I know I'm still in love I'm still in love

Don't come any closer I don't want you next to me
She said just don't come any closer I don't want you next to me
You know that I tried it all before and now I'm really sure
No-one can love no-one can love
No-one can love me no-one can love me
No-one can love me no-one can love me
But me no-one can love me
But me no-one can love me
But me no-one can love me
But me no-one can love

Venus Fly

Music and lyrics by Paul Marfleet

I always loved this music she'd say
And she closed her eyes and softly start to sway
Mesmerised by movement distracted and confused
Well I never had the strength to look away

Venus fly how can I win
Line and sinker reel me in

I never had the background never knew the rules
I was raised on romance laced with high ideals
You appeared I fell apart I lost myself to you
And I don't believe you quite know how that feels

Venus fly how can I win
Line and sinker reel me in

She's a cool momma she's a lithe lover
She's ev'rything and nothing left to chance
It's a cruel fire I'm restless with desire
As she beckons me to come and join her dance

It's a cruel fire I'm restless with desire
As she beckons me to come and join her dance
She's a cool momma she's a lithe lover
She's ev'rything and nothing left to chance

I always loved this music she'd say
And she closed her eyes and softly start to sway
And she put her arms around me and she whispered in my ear
And I never had the strength to go away

Venus fly how can I win
Line and sinker reel me in
Venus fly how can I win
Line and sinker reel me in
Line and sinker reel me in
Line and sinker reel me in
Line and sinker reel me in

One Love, Two Hearts

Music and lyrics by Andy Caven

How many times can we break our hearts
How many ways can we tear them apart
How many times can we hurt us so
If you'll never leave me then I'll never go

One love two hearts
Put it together and make a new start
One love two hearts
We can put it together
We can make it for ever

Love don't come easy put the blame on me
This love lasts a lifetime you can't set me free
I'm chained to your side I can't run and hide
Our love is an ocean we can't turn the tide

One love two hearts
Put it together and make a new start
One love two hearts
We can put it together
We can make it for ever

I'm not runnin' on empty I'm just runnin' low
I'm not stopped or broken I'm just runnin' slow
Won't you fill me up with your warm sweet love
Set me to summertime and just wind me up

One love two hearts
Put it together and make a new start
One love two hearts
We can put it together
We can make it for ever

Waking to your tender touch
Living with the love we need so much
Parting with your warm sweet kiss
Never fearing the future or the love we might miss

One love two hearts
Put it together and make a new start
One love two hearts
We can put it together
We can make it for ever

One love two hearts One love two hearts
One love two hearts One love two hearts
One love two hearts One love two hearts
One love two hearts One love two hearts

Turbulent Ego

Music and lyrics by Paul Marfleet

I got a turbulent ego
I got a winning smile
Self satisfaction
I got charm and guile
Guaranteed future
Significant yen
Smooth transition
From now till then

Wouldn't you like to know my name baby
Don't deny you know you do
Leave me your electronic number baby
I might get back to you

Got a high-toned body
Got length to spare
I got cool rhythm
I got more than my share
S hapely bicep
All-year tan
Neckline jewellry
I'm a real man

Wouldn't you like to know my name baby etc.

You got sensual movement
You got golden limb
Got me where you want me
Put my head in a spin
You got lithe locomotion
You got little black curl
Got me where you want me
Put my head in a whirl

I'd really like to know your name baby
Don't deny I know I do
Leave me your electronic number baby
I'm sure to get back to you

Every Heart Needs A Home

Music and lyrics by Paul Marfleet

Every heart needs a home
You and I were never meant to live alone
Every heart needs a home

Every soul needs a friend
That's what we meant when we said our love would never end
Every soul needs a friend

And when your world is tumbling down all around you
Windows and doors locked from within
And when it hurts too much the pain is still too new
Don't be afraid to let me in

Every heart needs a home
You are the only love I've ever known
Every heart needs a home

Every heart needs a home
You are the only love I've ever known
Every heart needs a home

And when your world is tumbling down all around you
Windows and doors locked from within
Just look around you'll find me ready standing there
Don't be afraid to let me in

Every heart needs a home
Every heart needs a home
You and I were never meant to live alone
So baby come on home

Still Waters

Music and lyrics by Andy Caven

Still the waters run deep and we might even drown
Are we still searching for a dream that we've already found
I don't know what to do but it's easier with you
I don't know what to do it's so much easier with you

You say you want my body then you steal my soul
We know it's love we're after it's way out of control
It must be love though we're caught on some crazy cruise
You're the one I want to win I'm the one you don't want to lose

Still the waters run deep and we might even drown
Are we still searching for a dream that we've already found

You want a love so real you can hold in your hand
I give you mine but it slips through your fingers like sand
You say you want my heart then you tear it apart
I can't pick up all the pieces I don't know where to start

Still the waters run deep and we might even drown
Are we still searching for a dream that we've already found
I don't know what to do but it's easier with you
I don't know what to do it's so much easier with you

All of my life I've been searching for just that one song
The words have escaped me and the tune always turns out wrong
I'd say I love you if I could only find the right words
There's more love in you than I've ever learned

Still the waters run deep and we might even drown
Are we still searching for a dream that we've already found

Still the waters run deep and we might even drown
Are we still searching for a dream that we've already found
I don't know what to do but it's easier with you
I don't know what to do it's so much easier with you

Are we still searching for a dream that we've already found
Still the waters run deep and we might even drown
Are we still searching for a dream that we've already found
Still the waters run deep and we might even drown

Misleading Propaganda

Music and lyrics by Andy Caven

I thought I might read the papers today
But when I glanced at that comic I threw it away
I wanted news they just gave me some views
About what was not happ'nin' in this world today

Are we livin' in a democracy
It just doesn't seem much like that way to me
Are we livin' in a democracy
It just doesn't seem much like that way to me

I switched on the TV so I could see
What the governments were doin' for the likes of me
But ev'ry picture tells a diff'rent story
They're not in it for the truth they're in it for the glory

Are we livin' in a democracy
It just doesn't seem much like that way to me

It seems to me we're all bein' used
And much worse than that we're all bein' confused
Nobody trusts us with the facts
They just bend them and shape them till they fit their acts

Are we livin' in a democracy
It just doesn't seem much like that way to me

Life isn't really so frustrated
It pays the politicians to keep it complicated
If it was easy then we'd do it for free
And they'd be out of a job just like you and me

Are we livin' in a democracy
It just doesn't seem much like that way to me

They say the politicians hate the press
But the papers are political just like the rest
Misleading propaganda's all you got to choose
So whichever way you turn you lose

I thought I might read the papers today
But when I glanced at that comic I threw it away
I wanted news they just gave me some views
About what was not happ'nin' in this world today

Are we livin' in a democracy
It just doesn't seem much like that way to me
Are we livin' in a democracy
It just doesn't seem much like that way to me
Are we livin' in a democracy
Are we livin' in are we livin' in
Are we livin' in a democracy
It just doesn't seem much like that way to me
Misleading propaganda's all we got to choose
So whichever way we turn we lose

Fat Cat

Music and lyrics by Paul Marfleet

Underworld contacts
Back street deals

Fat cat it's a perfect life
Fat cat don't tell the wife
Fat cat let the dollars roll
Fat cat you'll never get old

Cruisin' through the city with a satisfied smile
Glidin' down the hill to the golden mile
Open-top car you gotta look cool
You gotta look rich it's the golden rule

If you're gonna be a fat cat do it right
Creaming off the profits both day and night
If you're gonna be a fat cat do it right
Creaming off the profits both day and night

Fat cat it's a perfect life
Fat cat don't tell the wife
Fat cat let the dollars roll
Fat cat you'll never get old

Cruisin' through the city with a satisfied smile
Glidin' down the hill to the golden mile
House in the country a penthouse flat
Rooms at the club that's a-where it's at

If you're gonna be a fat cat do it right

Fat cat it's a perfect life
Fat cat don't tell the wife
Fat cat let the dollars roll
Fat cat you'll never get old

Cruisin' through the city with a satisfied smile
Glidin' down the hill to the golden mile
Wife in the village mistress in town
Livin' on the edge never gets you down

If you're gonna be a fat cat do it right

Fat cat it's a perfect life
Fat cat don't tell the wife
Fat cat let the dollars roll
Fat cat you'll never get old

Too Much Pressure

Music and lyrics by Rob Armstrong

You put the pressure on
You take the pressure off
You put the pressure on again
Now tell me what you got
You got ...
Too much pressure
Too much pressure
Too much pressure
Baby that's the life I love

The clicking of her heels
She's a-trippin' down the street
Could this be the woman
Who would make your life complete
She's just ...
Too much pressure
Too much pressure
Too much pressure
Baby that's the life I love

You're trynna hitch a ride
To the other side of town
Every road you travel by
The signs say turn around
Makin' ...
Too much pressure
Too much pressure
Too much pressure
Baby that's the life I love

So you put the pressure on
You take the pressure off
You put the pressure on again
Now tell me what you got
You got ...
Too much pressure
Too much pressure
Too much pressure
Baby that's the life I love

You're trynna make a score
You're trynna make a plan
You're trynna be a singer
With a hootchie cootchie band
There's just ...
Too much pressure
Too much pressure
Too much pressure
Baby that's the life I love

You're runnin' out of time
You're runnin' outa space
Looks like you'll be a loser
In the human race
With just ...
Too much pressure
Too much pressure
Too much pressure
Baby that's the life I love

So you put the pressure on
You take the pressure off
You put the pressure on again
Now tell me what you got
You got ...
Too much pressure
Too much pressure
Too much pressure
Baby that's the life I love

So you put the pressure on
You take the pressure off
You put the pressure on again
Now tell me what you got
You got ...
Too much pressure
Too much pressure
Too much pressure
Baby that's the life I love

Would It Be So Bad

Music and lyrics by Paul Marfleet

Would it be so bad if I never came home
Would it be so bad if I left you alone
Discuss the rights and wrongs
Still when all is said and done
Would it be so bad if I never came home

Would you even notice if I never came home
All these years it's been like living alone
Discuss the stay or go
Answer yes or no
You really wouldn't notice if I never came home

Out in the early hours
An open road the fading stars
No-one to tell me stay
I've cut the tie
I'm on my way
Twenty years
To a brand new day

So many people set with living a lie
So many people never ask themselves why
Discuss the pain inside
Or simply run and hide
So many people watching as the embers die

Out in the early hours
An open road the fading stars
No-one to tell me stay
I've cut the tie
I'm on my way
Twenty years
To a brand new day

Would it be so bad if I never came home
Would it be so bad if I left you alone
Would it be so bad if I never came home
Would it be so bad if I left you alone
Would it be so bad if I never came home
Would it be so bad if I left you alone

That's Enough

Music and lyrics by Andy Caven

I love you that's enough
I won't hit you with that hard-sell stuff
It was crazy from the start
But you're the one who won my heart
I love you that's enough
I won't hit you with that hard-sell stuff

I love you that's enough
I won't hit you with that hard-sell stuff
You're not the only one for me
Just the only one my heart can see
I love you that's enough
I won't hit you with that hard-sell stuff

I love you that's enough
To see us through when the going is rough
I love you is that so wrong
When I was weak you were always strong
I love you that's enough
I won't hit you with that hard-sell stuff

I love you that's enough
I'm still longing for your tender touch
I cannot unsay the words
I cannot undo the pain
I know now when I was wrong
I'd never wanna hurt you again
I love you that's enough
I won't hit you with that hard-sell stuff

I love you that's enough
I won't hit you with that hard-sell stuff
